What is Copy Editing?

Copy edits, also referred to as line edits, thoroughly analyze the manuscript for grammar via a line-by-line technique. It finds grammatical errors including, but not limited to, misused words, punctuation, tense issues, errors in dialogue tags, compound words, comma splices, repetitive words, and many more. This step is normally done after developmental editing is completed, or done in simultaneous with the development editing. This type of editing does not look at the methods of story crafting, worldbuilding, character development, and/or plot.

How Many Rounds Do I Need?

Most clients book 1 or 2 rounds of copy edits. DPT can recommend the number of rounds and which type of editing, but most clients prefer hybrid editing.

  • One round is ideal for the author who has performed self-edits, has a good grasp on grammar, and has an error rate of between 1-3%
  • Generally, two rounds are ideal for the author with less time to self-edit, has a hefty release schedule, or if the manuscript has an initial error rate between 3.1-5%
  • Error Rates: The number of errors found in a 1000 word portion.
